APPIC AWARD ANNOUNCEMENTS
The APPIC Board of Directors would like to congratulate
the recipients of the 2008 APPIC Awards! Please join us in our congratulations
to these individuals who demonstrate excellence and innovation in education and
training. Thanks as well to all of the many nominators who identified deserving
candidates for consideration. We invite you to attend the APPIC Business Meeting
during the APA Convention in Boston at which time the Awards will be presented.
Our meeting will be held jointly with the APPIC 40th Anniversary Celebration on
Thursday, August 14 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, Back
Bay Ballroom C. APPIC AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING Dr.
Michelle Hamilton, Director of Training New Orleans VA Medical Center Nomination:
"Dr. Hamilton has exemplified tenacity and innovation in her efforts to maintain
and revitalize a training program housed in a site that was devastated by the
effects of Hurricane Katrina. Our internship program would not have recovered
from Hurricane Katrina as fast or as completely without Dr. Hamilton's leadership.
She personifies what it means to be resilient." APPIC AWARD FOR
EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY TRAINING Dr. Patrick Reilly
San Francisco VA Medical Center Nomination: "I am nominating Patrick
M. Reilly, Ph.D. for the APPIC Award for Excellence in Diversity Training based
on his extraordinary leadership in the development and implementation of innovative
diversity training at the San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC). He has been
a dynamic, innovative promoter of Diversity Training at the SFVAMC. As an African-American,
Dr. Reilly has acute sensitivity to racial and ethnic issues, and his teaching
advances mutual respect, understanding and deep appreciation for cultural and
ethnic diversity." STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD Josh Gunn,
MA, Psychology Intern Southern Louisiana Internship Consortium; Graduate
Student, Purdue University Counseling Psychology Research: "Supervisee
Attachment: Relationship to the Alliance and Disclosure in Supervision."
This study examined the relationships between supervisee attachment to supervisor,
the supervisory working alliance, and trainee disclosures in supervision. Attachment
theory, a robust framework for understanding interpersonal relationships, was
used to more comprehensively illuminate bonding in the supervision relationship MERITORIOUS
SERVICE AWARD For their efforts and success in developing funding for
postdoctoral training and positions: Robert Zeiss, PhD VA Central
Office Washington, DC 20510-1102 Patrick DeLeon, PhD, ABPP Associated
Health Education Office of Senator Daniel Inouye Office of Academic Affiliations
Hart Senate Office Building Drs. Zeiss and DeLeon have transformed postdoctoral
training by seeking VA administrative support to broaden the development of programmatic
fellowship training in the U.S. Their efforts have lead to the development of
funding for 200+ positions, with all programs anticipating APPIC membership and
APA accreditation.
