2016 APPIC Match: Survey of Internship Applicants
Part 1: Summary of Survey Results
This report contains the results from the survey of internship applicants who
were registered for the 2016 APPIC Match.
This survey was conducted via the internet between February 19 and March 21,
2016. All 3,999 applicants who registered for the Match were sent an e-mail
message (along with two reminder e-mails) about the availability of the
survey at a specific internet address. A total of 2,474 applicants (62%)
completed some or all of the survey.
Results of the survey are presented below. Missing data and "Not Applicable"
responses were eliminated, and percentages do not necessarily total 100% due
to rounding. Some survey items requested open-ended comments about the AAPI,
APPIC Directory Online, the Match, etc. that are not reported below; however,
these anonymous comments were reviewed by the appropriate APPIC Board and/or
committee members who are responsible for each area.
Some of the more interesting findings from this survey include:
1. DEBT: Applicants' mean reported debt load related to
graduate level study in psychology was $93,719 (SD = 95,430,
median = $75,000)(see question 11). Approximately 43% reported
debt of $100,000 or higher while 29% reported debt exceeding
$150,000.
Please note that these figures do not include any additional
debt that these students may accrue during the remainder of
their graduate training (e.g., during internship).
2. INTERVIEW FORMAT: Applicants reported that most interviews were
conducted on-site (78%), followed by via telephone (9%), open
houses (7%), and Webcam/Skype (6%) (see question 18). Applicants
greatly preferred on-site interviews over other types of interview
formats (see item 32), with three-quarters indicating that
the benefits of an on-site interview outweigh the time, effort,
and costs of attending (see item 31e).
3. NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS: In Phase I, applicants submitted an
average of 16.1 internship applications (see question 15), which
was unchanged from the 2015 survey.
4. INTERVIEWS RECEIVED: In Phase I, applicants reported receiving
an average of 7.2 interviews (see question 16). This is an increase
from 6.2 interviews in 2012 and 6.7 interviews last year (2015).
5. GENDER: Approximately 80% of internship applicants in the 2016 Match
were female (see question 42). Questions 37-45 provide additional
demographic information.
6. PRACTICUM HOURS: Median doctoral hours reported by
applicants from the 2016 APPIC Match (see question 52):
Doctoral Intervention: Median = 600 (vs. 602 in 2015)
Doctoral Assessment: Median = 171 (vs. 164 in 2015)
Question 52 also provides the median numbers of masters
practicum hours reported by applicants.
APPIC recommends that applicants interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers
of practicum hours reported are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told
us that they consider these raw numbers to be one of the
less important aspects of an application.
7. SALARY: Applicants matched to U.S. sites reported a mean
internship salary of $26,213 USD, while applicants matched to
Canadian sites reported a mean salary of $32,407 CAD. See
question 28.

applications in previous years were:

2012 Match 16.3 applications
2011 Match 16.0 applications

16. Considering ALL of the sites to which you applied in Phase I,
how many did NOT notify you of your interview status (e.g.,
received an interview, no longer under consideration) on or
before the "interview notification date" listed in their APPIC
Directory information?
Mean = 0.6 Median = 0
SD = 1.3 Mode = 0
NOTE: Results from this question cannot be directly compared
to the results of previous surveys due to a change in response
options implemented this year.
NOTE: A total of 66% of applicants reported being properly
notified of their interview status by all sites to which
they applied.
17. How many interviews (on-site, telephone, skype, open house)
were you offered during Phase I?
Mean = 7.2 Median = 7
SD = 4.0 Mode = 5
NOTE: The mean number of interviews offered was 6.2 in 2012

following methods: (Each interview should be counted in only
one category)
On-Site Interview Mean = 5.9 (78%)
Open House Mean = 0.5 ( 7%)
Telephone Interview Mean = 0.7 ( 9%)
Interview via WebCam, Skype, etc. Mean = 0.5 ( 6%)
Other Mean = 0 ( 0%)
NOTE: Percentages are the proportion of interviews that were
in the specified format. Many applicants left some of these
items blank. Thus, for this question, blank responses were
treated as "zero."
19. How many programs did you include on your final Rank Order List
in Phase I (i.e., how many program code numbers were listed)?
Mean = 7.7 Median = 7
SD = 4.5 Mode = 4
NOTE: Use caution when comparing these numbers with the results
from questions 14-18, since some sites used multiple program code
numbers.
20. Did you participate in the Match with another person as a
“couple” (i.e., by using special Match procedures to submit
pairs of rankings)?
Yes 26 1 %
No 2433 99 %

printing, copying, regular and overnight mailing, etc.

Following are a series of questions that request personal demographic
information.
We are seeking your responses to these questions because from time to time we
are asked about the effect of various demographic factors on Match rates.

of information, to date we have been unable to answer these questions. We
hope that this survey will allow us to more definitively understand the

questions, you may skip any item that you do not feel comfortable

QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR AAPI
The following items request information directly from your AAPI
(APPIC Application for Psychology Internships). We greatly
appreciate your taking a few moments to locate the information
requested.
It may be helpful to have a printed copy of your AAPI available OR
to login to the AAPI Online Applicant Portal in a separate browser
window while you complete this survey.
52. We would like to know the TOTAL NUMBER OF PRACTICUM HOURS that
you reported on your AAPI, including doctoral hours and terminal
masters hours. (This information is located in the "Summary of
Doctoral Training" section of the AAPI online, about halfway
down the page under "Summary of Practicum Experience." Please
enter all six numbers from this section below.)
a. INTERVENTION: Doctoral Hours Median = 600 N = 1854
Mean = 654 SD = 304
b. INTERVENTION: Terminal Masters Hours Median = 0 N = 1189
Mean = 114 SD = 317
c. INTERVENTION: Total Completed Hours Median = 645.5 N = 1746
Mean = 733 SD = 408
d. ASSESSMENT: Doctoral Hours Median = 171 N = 1836

Median 602 600 548

Mean 231 130 262
SD 204 128 146
Median 180 100 245
N 1477 200 95
NOTE: APPIC advises applicants to interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers of
practicum hours listed above are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told us
that they consider these numbers to be one of the less important
aspects of an application.
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank were excluded from
the calculation for that specific item. Medians may be a
more accurate representation given that means and standard
deviations were greatly affected by a small number of applicants
who reported an extremely high number of hours.
53. For each of the following populations, what was the total number
of supervised integrated psychological reports that you reported
on your AAPI? (This information can be found in the
"Psychological Assessment Experience" section of the AAPI Online,
under "Integrated Psychological Reports.")
Adults Median = 8 n = 1806
Children / Adolescents Median = 5 n = 1704
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank were excluded from
the calculation for that specific item. Only medians were reported,
as means and standard deviations were greatly affected by a few
applicants who reported an extremely large number of integrated
reports.

SANCTIONED clinical experiences/practica prior to November 1,
