2017 APPIC Match: Survey of Internship Applicants
Part 1: Summary of Survey Results
This report contains the results from the survey of internship applicants who
were registered for the 2017 APPIC Match.
This survey was conducted via the internet between February 17 and March 19,
2017. All 3,921 applicants who registered for the Match were sent an e-mail
message (along with two reminder e-mails) about the availability of the
survey at a specific internet address. A total of 2,351 applicants (60%)
completed some or all of the survey.
Results of the survey are presented below. Missing data and "Not Applicable"
responses were eliminated, and percentages do not necessarily total 100% due
to rounding. Some survey items requested open-ended comments about the AAPI,
APPIC Directory Online, the Match, etc. that are not reported below; however,
these anonymous comments were reviewed by the appropriate APPIC Board and/or
committee members who are responsible for each area.
Some of the more interesting findings from this survey include:
1. DEBT: Applicants' mean reported debt load related to
graduate level study in psychology was $90,998 (SD = 100,033,
median = $63,131)(see question 9). Approximately 42% reported
debt of $100,000 or higher while 9% reported debt exceeding
$250,000. Approximately 25% reported no debt related to graduate
study in psychology.
Please note that these figures do not include any additional
debt that these students may accrue during the remainder of
their graduate training (e.g., during internship).
2. SALARY: Applicants matched to U.S. sites reported a mean
internship salary of $27,236 USD, while applicants matched to
Canadian sites reported a mean salary of $32,139 CAD. See
question 23.
3. STANDARDIZED REFERENCE FORM (SRF): With regard to the revised SRF
that was introduced this year, 71% of applicants reported that
their references had no difficulties or concerns in the use of that
form. A total of 13% reported difficulties/concerns, while 9% said
they didn't know or were unsure. See question 28.
A total of 13% of students reported that at least one of their
references asked them to write their own letter of recommendation.
See question 29.
4. NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS: In Phase I, applicants submitted an
average of 15.6 internship applications (see question 12).
5. INTERVIEW OFFERS: In Phase I, applicants reported receiving
an average of 7.4 interview offers (see question 14).
6. GENDER: Approximately 78% of internship applicants in the 2017
Match identified as female (see question 37). Questions 32-40
provide additional demographic information.
7. PRACTICUM HOURS: Median doctoral hours reported by applicants
(excludes terminal masters hours; see question 44):
Doctoral Intervention: Median = 598
Doctoral Assessment: Median = 178
Question 44 also provides the median numbers of terminal masters
practicum hours reported by applicants, as well as hours reported
by clinical, counseling, and school psychology students.
APPIC recommends that applicants interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers
of practicum hours reported are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told
us that they consider these raw numbers to be one of the
less important aspects of an application.

for applicants to submit more than 15 applications.
13. Considering ALL of the sites to which you applied in Phase I,

received an interview, no longer under consideration) on or

in the specified format. Many applicants left some of these
items blank. Thus, for this question, blank responses were
treated as "zero."

from questions 12-15, since some sites used multiple program code
numbers.
17. APPIC would like to know how much money you spent on various
aspects of the application and selection process for Phase I only.
Application costs involve preparing and submitting applications
to sites, and may include such items as the fee for the AAPI

DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
Following are a series of questions that request personal demographic
information.
We are seeking your responses to these questions because from time to time we
are asked about the effect of various demographic factors on Match rates.
Since at no time in the application process do we collect this type
of information, to date we have been unable to answer these questions. We
hope that this survey will allow us to more definitively understand the
potential impact of these factors on the internship selection process.
The information that you provide will remain ANONYMOUS and will be reported
in aggregate form only. While we hope that you will answer all of these
questions, you may skip any item that you do not feel comfortable
answering. However, the more responses that we receive, the more accurate
our data will be.

QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR AAPI
The following items request information directly from your AAPI
(APPIC Application for Psychology Internships). We greatly
appreciate your taking a few moments to locate the information
requested.
It may be helpful to have a printed copy of your AAPI available OR
to login to the AAPI Online Applicant Portal in a separate browser
window while you complete this survey.
44. We would like to know the TOTAL NUMBER OF PRACTICUM HOURS that
you reported on your AAPI, including doctoral hours and terminal
masters hours. (This information is located in the "Summary of
Doctoral Training" section of the AAPI online, about halfway
down the page under "Summary of Practicum Experience." Please
enter all six numbers from this section below.)
a. INTERVENTION: Doctoral Hours Median = 598 N = 1791
Mean = 649 SD = 294
b. INTERVENTION: Terminal Masters Hours Median = 272 N = 374
Mean = 355 SD = 416
c. INTERVENTION: Total Completed Hours Median = 640 N = 1684

SD 170 155 180
Median 175 187 185
N 1286 226 106
NOTE: APPIC advises applicants to interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers of
practicum hours listed above are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told us
that they consider these numbers to be one of the less important
aspects of an application.
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank or specified zero hours
were excluded from the calculations for that specific item (this is
a change from previous years' calculations for this question).
Medians may be a more accurate representation given that means and
standard deviations were greatly affected by a small number of
applicants who reported an extremely high number of hours.
45. For each of the following populations, what was the total number
of supervised integrated psychological reports that you reported
on your AAPI? (This information can be found in the
"Psychological Assessment Experience" section of the AAPI Online,
under "Integrated Psychological Reports.")
Adults Median = 8 n = 1755
Children / Adolescents Median = 6 n = 1645
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank were excluded from
the calculation for that specific item; responses of zero were
included in calculations. Only medians were reported, as means
and standard deviations were greatly affected by a few applicants
who reported an extremely large number of integrated reports.
