2018 APPIC Match: Survey of Internship Applicants
Part 1: Summary of Survey Results
This report contains the results from the survey of internship applicants who
were registered for the 2018 APPIC Match.
This survey was conducted via the internet between February 23 and March 25,
2018. All 3,779 applicants who registered for the Match were sent an e-mail
message (along with two reminder e-mails) about the availability of the
survey at a specific internet address. A total of 2,221 applicants (59%)
completed some or all of the survey.
Results of the survey are presented below. Missing data and "Not Applicable"
responses were eliminated, and percentages do not necessarily total 100% due
to rounding. Some survey items requested open-ended comments about the AAPI,
APPIC Directory Online, the Match, etc. that are not reported below; however,
these anonymous comments were reviewed by the appropriate APPIC Board and/or
committee members who are responsible for each area.
Some of the more interesting findings from this survey include:
1. It should be noted that, beginning in 2018, only students from doctoral
programs that were accredited or awarded an accreditation site visit
were eligible to participate in the APPIC Match.
2. DEBT: Applicants' mean reported debt load related to
graduate level study in psychology was $91,750 (SD = 103,937,
median = $60,000)(see question 9). Approximately 40% reported
debt of $100,000 or higher while 10% reported debt exceeding
$250,000. Approximately 27% reported no debt related to graduate
study in psychology.
Please note that these figures do not include any additional
debt that these students may accrue during the remainder of
their graduate training (e.g., during internship).
3. SALARY: Applicants matched to U.S. sites reported a median
internship salary of $27,000 USD (compared to $25,400 last year,
up 6.3%), while applicants matched to Canadian sites reported a
median salary of $31,900 CAD (compared to $31,000 last year,
up 2.9%). See question 23.
4. NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS: In Phase I, applicants submitted an
average of 15.4 internship applications (see question 12).
5. INTERVIEW OFFERS: In Phase I, applicants reported receiving
an average of 7.4 interview offers (see question 14).
6. PRACTICUM HOURS: Median doctoral hours reported by applicants
(excludes terminal masters hours; see question 42):
Doctoral Intervention: Median = 609
Doctoral Assessment: Median = 175
Question 42 also provides the median numbers of terminal masters
practicum hours reported by applicants, as well as hours reported
by clinical, counseling, and school psychology students.
APPIC recommends that applicants interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers
of practicum hours reported are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told
us that they consider these raw numbers to be one of the
less important aspects of an application.

for applicants to submit more than 15 applications.
13. Considering all of the sites to which you applied in Phase I,

Interview via WebCam, Skype, etc. Mean = 1.1 (12%)
Other Mean = 0.1 ( 1%)
NOTE: Percentages are the proportion of interviews that were
in the specified format. Many applicants left some of these
items blank. Thus, for this question, blank responses were
treated as "zero." Some respondents appeared to have counted
their interviews in multiple categories.
16. How many programs did you include on your final Rank Order List
in Phase I (i.e., how many program code numbers were listed)?
Mean = 7.6 Median = 7
SD = 4.2 Mode = 6
NOTE: Use caution when comparing these numbers with the results
from questions 12-15, since some sites used multiple program code
numbers.
17. APPIC would like to know how much money you spent on various
aspects of the application and selection process for Phase I only.

NOTE: APPIC advises applicants to interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers of
practicum hours listed above are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told us
that they consider these numbers to be one of the less important
aspects of an application.
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank or specified zero hours
were excluded from the calculations for that specific item.
Medians may be a more accurate representation given that means and
standard deviations may have been greatly affected by a small number
of applicants who reported an extremely high number of hours.
43. For each of the following populations, what was the total number
of supervised integrated psychological reports that you reported
on your AAPI? (This information can be found in the
"Psychological Assessment Experience" section on a printed copy
of your AAPI, under "Integrated Psychological Reports.")
Adults Median = 7 n = 1702
Children / Adolescents Median = 6 n = 1635
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank were excluded from
the calculation for that specific item; responses of zero were
included in calculations. Only medians were reported, as means
and standard deviations were greatly affected by a few applicants
who reported an extremely large number of integrated reports.
