2017 APPIC Match Statistics - Phase II

This report provides statistics and information about Phase II of the 2017 APPIC Match and the submission of applications via the AAPI Online service in Phase II.

OVERVIEW OF PHASE II

At the conclusion of Phase II, the number of unfilled positions (284) exceeded the estimated number of applicants who were still seeking positions (144) by 140.

With regard to the accreditation status of the internship programs that participated in Phase II:

• 72% of applicants who were matched in Phase II were placed in accredited internship positions, as compared to 60% in 2016 and 35% in 2015.


• 50% of positions in Phase II were in accredited programs, as compared to 46% in 2016 and 29% in 2015.


• 80% of positions in accredited programs in Phase II were filled, as compared to 84% in 2016 and 88% in 2015.


• 31% of the positions in non-accredited internship programs in Phase II were filled, as compared to 48% in 2016 and 68% in 2015.

NOTE: APPIC and NMS have made some changes to how information is presented in this report. For example, in previous years, programs and positions that submitted no ranks in Phase II were grouped with those that withdrew, whereas this year they are grouped with other available positions. These changes were made in order to better reflect the shifting imbalance between applicants and positions. In this report, the previous years' data shown above has been re-calculated in a manner consistent with the 2017 statistics, but comparisons of this report to previous years' Match statistics should be performed cautiously.

Each Position Was Ranked by an Average of 4.2 Applicants.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

NOTE: A training site can offer more than one "program" in the Match. Each "program" was identified in the Match by a separate 6-digit code number.

NOTE: 65 of the programs that remained unfilled submitted either no ranks or fewer ranks than the number of positions available in Phase II.

NOTE: No ranks were submitted for 99 of the positions that remained unfilled in Phase II.

Non-accredited positions represented 77% of all positions remaining unfilled in Phase II of the Match.
