2016 APPIC Match Statistics - Phase II

March 21, 2016

This report provides statistics and information about Phase II of the 2016 APPIC Match and the submission of applications via the AAPI Online service in Phase II.

In Phase II of the 2016 APPIC Match, a total of 361 applicants were matched to positions, 126 applicants were not matched, and 278 applicants withdrew or did not submit any rankings. A total of 147 positions remained unfilled.

A few notes about the Phase II results:

  1. While 765 students were eligible to participate in Phase II, only 552 students submitted one or more applications and were thus actively seeking one of the 508 available positions. The remaining 213 students likely had varied reasons for not submitting applications, such as deciding to delay their internship for family or academic reasons, deciding to seek an internship position outside of the APPIC Match, finding that positions in Phase II did not meet their training or geographic requirements, etc.

  2. The average number of applications received by internship sites in Phase II dropped from 39.5 last year to 24.3 this year (a decrease of 38.5%), while the median number of applications dropped from 22 to 14 (a 36.4% decrease).

  3. The percentage of positions that were accredited in Phase II rose from 30.1% (140 of 465) last year to 45.8% (265 of 578) this year. The percentage of matched applicants who were placed in accredited internship programs in Phase II rose from 35.1% last year to 60.4% this year.

  4. Only 46% of the positions in non-accredited programs in Phase II were filled (as compared to 66% last year). A total of 82% of the positions in accredited programs in Phase II were filled (as compared to 84% last year).
