APPIC Mentorship and Community FAQ

Q: What happens in a community call?

A: Community Calls reflect topics that impact a large proportion of APPIC membership, are often delivered at a time that member programs are navigating annual processes or events related to those tasks and will share information that will assist member programs in managing their internship and post-doctoral training programs.

Q: What is the format of the three different types of calls?

A: The format of the calls:

  • Community calls are delivered in a ‘webinar style’ format where APPIC members who join are primarily learning from the speakers, though discussion and questions are encouraged.
  • Informal Problem Consultation Drop In requires pre-registration, and the link will only be sent to APPIC Members who have registered for the call and are planning on engaging with the APPIC Board representatives for the purposes of asking questions or seeking guidance on a problem. It is the expectation of those who are joining the IPC Drop in Calls to actively participate with cameras on and engage during this call.
  • The New Training Director Mentorship Calls are open to all New Training Directors who have been in the role 3 years or less, and are staffed by experienced APPIC Board Members and/or Experienced Training Directors who are part of the APPIC Membership Community.

Q: Should I have my camera on during any of these calls?

A: Yes! We expect that individuals who join the calls are seeking to build community and connect with other TDs.  As such, being able to see each other facilitates these relationships.   We also recognize that there may be times when this is not possible or when you need a screen break.

Q: What is the purpose of holding an Informal Problem Consultation call?

A: Member programs are dynamic, ever evolving, and managing complex relationships and structures. The APPIC Board is aware that member programs may be grappling with situations over the course of the training year that they would wish for more guidance or insights from experienced training directors. In addition, many questions or consultation requests are similar in nature and the APPIC board felt it would be helpful to hold monthly Informal Problem Consultation Drop In sessions to broaden access and availability for discussion. Training Directors may also be unsure of where to find information or resources or have a question about how to operationalize a specific APPIC policy.

Q: Does the Informal Problem Consultation Monthly Call replace the one to one Informal Problem Consultation service?

A: No. APPIC will continue to offer the structured process for accessing individualized one to one Informal Problem Consultation which can be accessed through our website appic.org where the form to fill out is located on the “Problem Consultation” page.

Q: What types of situations might a Training Director bring up during an Informal Problem Consultation call?

A: Training Directors may be dealing with all kinds of situations that they wish some support or for an outside perspective but do not feel the need to request a more formalized one to one meeting. These could include, but are not limited to, unusual requests from trainees, how to support trainees struggling with learning in a particular area, what to do when they are experiencing challenges with managing supervisors, etc. If you have a topic in mind, or are seeking help for a specific issue that you want to be sure will be discussed during the call, please email the host for the session you are planning on attending (their email is included in the details for that month) so we can be sure to include it on the agenda.

Q: Who should attend the New Training Director Mentorship Calls?

A: These calls are targeted for Training Directors who have been in their roles for three years or less and are still learning the intricacies of the role of a Training Director. Being a TD is may be a lonely experience as you are the only person in your organization in the role. The APPIC Board is committed to fostering a sense of community among TDs of APPIC Member programs by creating opportunities for connection and learning. . Experienced mentors who have been in their roles as Training Directors of Internship and Postdoctoral programs will be available each month to answer questions, or share about their own processes for operationalizing aspects of the training program. If you have a topic in mind, or are seeking help for a specific issue that you want to be sure will be discussed during the call, please email the host for that month so they can be sure to include it on the agenda.
