A postdoctoral residency at Sanford Behavioral Health in Thief River Falls offers a variety of opportunities for professional growth.  We are both an inpatient psychiatric hospital and an outpatient clinic.  We also have providers working at the medical center in primary care.  This residency focuses on rural psychology as providers at Sanford Behavioral Health serve a large geographic area, which gives us the opportunity to work with many different types of clients with different presenting concerns.  We serve individuals throughout the lifespan.  Our site will give residents a rare opportunity to work with the broadest spectrum of mental health clients, from those individuals who are working on personal growth to those who are dealing with active psychosis.  Residents are expected to work in both outpatient and inpatient settings.  Our residents also have the opportunity to receive training in a variety of specialty areas; this could include consulting with other psychologists who practice in our clinic, as well as master's-level providers.  It is also not unusual for interdisciplinary consults to be available and/or occur regularly.  There will be opportunities to provide individual therapy, couple therapy, and family therapy.  Residents also are included in the rotation of those who lead group therapy as part of the inpatient programming.  In addition, residents have the potential to provide education and consultation to fellow Sanford Health employees, as well as local business owners, schools, and social groups.  Residents are likely to be exposed to assessments for the court that determine someone's mental state at the time of a crime and/or someone's competency to stand trial.  The clinic also provides assessments for bariatric and spinal stimulator procedures and potential new hire law enforcement interviews, which can be observed by residents.  Residents will also be expected to perform testing and assessments for a variety of referral questions.  Their time on the inpatient unit will also afford them the opportunity to witness the civil commitment process and the role of a court-appointed examiner.  The resident will learn about, and interact with, additional community based resources that are available to patients and clients.  This is a challenging and gratifying training experience that will help residents develop into confident, professional, independent early-career psychologists.  Sanford Behavioral Health is a connected team of spirited individuals who make it a priority to support each other and collaborate with one another.  We look forward to having you as part of our team!
