The A-Z postdoctoral residency training program is geared toward comprehensive training in neuropsychological assessment. The program is designed to last 2 years, and to prepare residents to pursue board certification (ABPP) in Clinical Neuropsychology.

Residents have the opportunity to receive training in both pediatric and adult neuropsychological assessment, and referral sources as well as presenting conditions are decidedly diverse (e.g., ranging from autism spectrum disorder to dementia with Lewy bodies). We believe that a competent understanding of all ages is critical to good practice, and also that a postdoctoral residency program should prioritize breadth of training more than specialization. In addition to the didactic experiences provided through the Consortium to residents, A-Z hosts an in-house didactic series equipped with mock examination elements designed specifically to assist residents in preparing for the ABPP board certification process.

Our office is generally open weekdays from 8 am - 5 pm, though Dr. Burger occasionally conducts assessments or otherwise provides services during evening or weekend hours. Residents are not required to work outside of normal business hours; should there be a case they wish to be involved in that is happening outside of normal hours, arrangements can be made to reduce hours during a neighboring week (in order to maintain the 40 hour per work week expectation).

Neuropsychological assessment (clinical interview, formal testing, scoring, report writing, and feedback provision) with adults first, and then with children - 75% • Participation in the development and provision of evidence-based group protocols tailored toward conditions of neurologic compromise (e.g., literature reviews, adaptations of existing protocols, etc.) and in the subsequent provision of clinical services in a group format - 10% • Development and provision of 2 presentations (on approved topics) per year, formatted like CE courses - 2.5% • Monthly attendance at didactic trainings, orchestrated by the Arizona Psychology Training Consortium (PHX area), attendance/participation in in-house/conference didactic opportunities - 10%-12.5% • Maintenance of a small (1 client at a time) therapy caseload desired (optional) - 2.5%.

Group therapy is planned to resume in January of 2025, with caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative (dementia) conditions and individuals in the early stages of neurodegeneration serving as our initial target groups. Future planned target groups include TBI survivors and children with executive challenges (e.g., those on the spectrum or with ADHD and related conditions). The opportunity to carry a small therapy caseload (1 client at a time) is offered to residents once they are independently testing (i.e., following training completion), but not required.

This site offers Individual and Group supervision as well as Case Conferences.
